Christmas in Mexico: traditions and the best places to experience it

Where to spend Christmas in Mexico?

Mexican Christmas is a holiday full of ancestral traditions, family events and a warm and festive atmosphere in every corner of the country.

If you are looking for special destinations to celebrate this time of the year, from Hertz Mexico we present five places that offer unique experiences to spend Christmas: San Cristobal de las Casas, Patzcuaro, Tepotzotlan, Chignahuapan and Veracruz.

How is Christmas celebrated in Mexico?

Christmas in Mexico blends Catholic customs with indigenous and Spanish influences, creating a unique celebration.

This is a holiday full of color, traditions and a deep sense of community. Celebrations begin on December 16 with the posadas, which represent the pilgrimage of Joseph and Mary in search of shelter. During the posadas, families and neighbors gather to sing Christmas carols, pray, break piñatas and share traditional food.

December 24, Christmas Eve, is the most important moment. Families attend the Misa de Gallo (Midnight Mass) and then enjoy a Christmas dinner that includes dishes such as cod, romeritos and turkey. The exchange of gifts is also common, although in some regions it is customary to wait until Three Kings Day, January 6.

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas

San Cristobal de las Casas, located in the heart of Chiapas, is a magical destination where Christmas is experienced in a special way. The cobblestone streets and colonial houses are adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, creating a beautiful landscape full of peace.

Traditions and events

In San Cristóbal, indigenous customs are intertwined with Catholic traditions. Among the most outstanding activities is the Niño Florero, a procession that mixes Catholic devotion with indigenous symbols.

The posadas are also an essential part of the celebration, with parades through the streets with figures of Joseph and Mary seeking shelter, accompanied by Christmas carols and traditional music.

Pátzcuaro's plazas are filled with lights and Christmas markets offer handicrafts, traditional sweets and decorations. One of the most anticipated events is the representation of the Pastorelas, which are plays that tell the story of the birth of Jesus and the struggle of good against evil. There are also posadas and mariachi music that fill the streets.
