5 of the best places to visit in Huasteca Potosina

The Huasteca Potosina is one of the most beautiful regions of San Luis Potosi. It hides beautiful places such as the Tamul waterfall, Puente de Dios, Tamasopo and Xilitla, among many others. Touring these destinations by car is an excellent way to explore their wonders, allowing the flexibility to stop and enjoy each destination at your own pace. Therefore, from Hertz Mexico we present a suggested itinerary for an unforgettable three-day trip, visiting the 5 main attractions of the region with a rental car. This tour will take you through spectacular landscapes and allow you to immerse yourself in the rich culture and nature of the Huasteca Potosina, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience.

Tour of the Huasteca Potosina by car

As we mentioned, the Huasteca Potosina has incredible places to see and the easiest, fastest and most convenient way to tour it is by car rental. In this sense, we will show you a 3-day itinerary that you can do departing from different places such as the state capital San Luis de Potosi, Queretaro or Mexico City. In any of these cities you have the option to rent a car with Hertz Mexico and start your adventure.

Day 1: Xilitla

If you are departing from San Luis Potosi, you have approximately a 3.5 hour drive to the charming town of Xilitla. From Mexico City, the drive is about 8 hours, and from Querétaro, about 5 hours by car. Xilitla is famous for the Surrealist Garden created by the British artist Edward James, who, in love with the lush landscape of the region, decided to build a magical universe where nature and surrealist art merge into a unique experience. Stroll along the trails and discover the fascinating sculptures and structures surrounded by vegetation. This is a unique place in the world and a true jewel of the Huasteca Potosina, where you can discover hidden passages, stairs that lead to nowhere and structures that defy gravity. In addition, the garden hides a waterfall and several fresh water pools where you can swim and cool off. On the other hand, when visiting Xilitla, don't miss its beautiful historic center, with cobblestone streets and plazas surrounded by colonial houses that evoke the architectural richness of the region. In the heart of the historic center is the Ex Convento San Agustín, an architectural treasure from the 16th century, which narrates the local religious history. This convent is a sample of the cultural and religious legacy of the time. Explore its cloisters and admire the beauty of its architecture as you immerse yourself in the history of Xilitla.

Day 2: Xilitla to Sótano de las Golondrinas and Tamasopo

Start your day very early from Xilitla and drive approximately 1.5 hours to the Sótano de las Golondrinas. This impressive site, known locally as El Sótano de Huahuas, is a vertical cavern more than 300 meters deep. It is a natural wonder that is home to thousands of birds that at dawn leave their nests and fly to the surface in search of food. To experience this spectacle, you must leave early in the morning for the sierra, equipped with appropriate clothing and footwear to descend more than 500 steps. The mouth of the basement, 60 meters in diameter, will take your breath away. In silence, wait for the departure of the swallows, which emerge in a mind-blowing spiral, a unique migratory phenomenon that lasts about an hour. After this experience, continue your journey for another hour and a half to Tamasopo, a destination known for its impressive waterfalls and natural pools. Here you will find one of the wonders of Potosi: the Puente de Dios (Bridge of God). This place will take your breath away with its turquoise water cavern, formed by the erosion of the river and surrounded by lush vegetation. Then, you can spend the afternoon relaxing at the Tamasopo waterfalls, where the crystalline and refreshing waters invite you to swim and enjoy nature. This place is perfect for those seeking tranquility and an intimate contact with the natural environment.

Day 3: Tamasopo to Tamul Waterfall and Tamtoc

From Tamasopo, head to the majestic Tamul Waterfall, one of the most visited destinations in the Huasteca Potosina. To get there, drive to La Morena, where you can board a canoe and paddle to the Tamul waterfall. Local guides will lead you through the turquoise waters of the river, revealing breathtaking landscapes until you reach the waterfall, which plunges from 100 meters above the Santa Maria River. In addition, you can visit the Cueva de Agua, a 45-meter deep cenote, ideal for a refreshing dip and explore its unique rock formations. If you prefer not to paddle, you can access the waterfalls from the top, hiking 1 km to admire their majesty from another perspective. Then, travel for two hours to Tamtoc, an ancient Huastecan city. This pre-Hispanic site reveals the cultural richness of the ancient Huastecan inhabitants, with more than 170 structures including plazas, ceremonial and residential buildings. Tamtoc is a testimony to the cultural and archaeological heritage of the Huasteca Potosina. This archaeological site offers a window into the region's pre-Hispanic past, with its ruins and monumental sculptures. Take the opportunity to explore the structures and learn about the history and culture of the ancient inhabitants. This 3-day tour of the Huasteca Potosina will allow you to discover the natural and cultural diversity of the region, through the 5 best places this destination has to offer. From the surreality of Xilitla to the majesty of the waterfalls and the historical richness of Tamtoc, each one is a unique experience. Be sure to bring your camera, comfortable clothes and an adventurous spirit to make the most of this road trip with Hertz Mexico.
