What to do in Xilitla? 5 places you should know

Mexico is a very diverse country, with unique and spectacular destinations. In every corner of the territory you find an amazing place to explore and today is the turn of Xilitla. This magical town is located approximately 5 hours by car from San Luis de Potosi and 7 and a half hours from CDMX. You can rent a car in any of these locations and start a new adventure to Xilitla. Discover what to do in this incredible destination and prepare your new road trip with Hertz Mexico.

1 Las Pozas: Surrealistic garden

Las Pozas is one of Xilitla's must-see attractions located in the depths of the Mexican jungle. This famous surrealist garden was created by British artist Edward James, who, in love with the lush landscape of the region, decided to create a unique universe that defies the conventions of reality. In Las Pozas you will find a labyrinth of sculptures, structures and waterfalls that blend harmoniously with the lush tropical vegetation. Organic and surreal forms emerge among the lush palms and vines, creating a mysterious and magical atmosphere. Visitors can discover hidden passageways, stairways leading to nowhere and gravity-defying structures, all surrounded by the music of birds and the murmur of crystal-clear waters flowing through the site. Visiting Las Pozas is more than just going to a garden, it is a living work of art that at every step takes you to a new surreal experience.

2 Historic Center, Former San Agustin Convent and Leonora Carrington Museum

Without a doubt, if you visit Xilitla, you must visit its historic center, which brings together centuries of history and tradition. You can stroll through its cobblestone streets and picturesque squares surrounded by colonial houses, which evoke the architectural richness of the region. In addition, in the heart of the historic center is the Ex Convento San Agustín, an architectural jewel of the 16th century that allows you to learn about the religious history of the region. A few meters from the Ex-Convent, in a beautiful restored colonial house, is the Leonora Carrington Museum. There you can discover the work of the famous surrealist artist, as well as personal artifacts, which offer an intimate view of her life and creative process. Exploring downtown Xilitla is an unforgettable experience to appreciate the rich history and vibrant culture of this Mexican town.

3 Sótano de las Golondrinas

The Sótano de las Golondrinas, known locally as El Sótano de Huahuas, is a vertical cavern more than 300 meters deep. This natural wonder is the refuge of thousands of birds that at dawn leave their nest and fly together to the surface in search of food. The adventure begins at dawn, so you must take your car at dawn and head to the mountains to experience this unique spectacle of the Huasteca Potosina. You must be prepared to descend a staircase of more than 500 steps, so it is recommended to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. The mouth of the basement measures approximately 60 meters in diameter, constituting a colossal abyss that will leave you breathless. Once there, you must wait in silence to see the birds come out. Gradually, you will begin to hear an enigmatic sound coming from the cavern, indicating the proximity of the swallows. Then, one by one, they begin to leave, followed by thousands of others, forming a mind-blowing spiral. The unique event lasts about an hour, where you will be the protagonist of one of the most amazing migratory phenomena in the world.

4 Los Comales Waterfall

Los Comales Waterfall, located next to the Surrealist Garden, is a place not to be missed during your visit to Xilitla. This waterfall is characterized by its crystalline waterfalls that cascade over rocks and natural formations, creating a magical and refreshing atmosphere. In addition to enjoying the waterfall, you have the possibility of participating in exciting activities offered at the site, such as the temazcal service, a traditional pre-Hispanic steam ceremony, which provides an experience of purification and relaxation in the midst of nature. On the other hand, for adrenaline lovers, the rappel service offers the opportunity to descend the rocky walls surrounding the waterfall, providing a unique and exciting perspective of this impressive natural landscape. You also have the option of going to the waterfall's viewpoint to appreciate its fall from above. Connect with nature and enjoy the adventure in the spectacular surroundings of Los Comales.

5 Tamul Waterfall and La Morena Jetty

The Tamul Waterfall is one of the most famous and visited places in the Huasteca Potosina. To get there, you must drive approximately 70 km from Xilitla to La Morena, where you can board a canoe and paddle to the Tamul waterfall.
From here, local guides lead visitors through the turquoise waters of the river, revealing breathtaking landscapes, until you reach these waterfalls that, with a height of 100 meters, plummet over the Santa Maria River. In addition, you can visit the Water Cave, a cenote some 45 meters deep, to enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters and explore the unique rock formations that adorn the cave's interior. However, if you are not one of those who like to paddle, there is the option of reaching the Tamul Waterfalls from the upper part, making a 1 km walk, from where you can appreciate its majesty with another perspective.

As you may have noticed, Xilitla has several attractions nearby, so to get there and visit them, car rental is the most practical way. Get to know the options that Hertz Mexico has to rent a car and embark on an unforgettable road trip.
