In addition, the Saltillo airport has a Hertz Mexico office, so you can rent a car as soon as you arrive and tour the city and its surroundings. The climate is semi-dry and temperate, with cold winters and warm summers. The best time to visit Saltillo is during the spring and fall, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees, ideal for exploring Saltillo and its surroundings.

What to do in Saltillo?

In Saltillo there are activities for all tastes thanks to its combination of history, culture and nature. You can find up to 24 different museums, impressive natural sights and a historic center with old buildings with unique facades, made of pink quarry stone. This northern Mexican city is a place worth visiting, and here are some of Saltillo's tourist attractions for you to visit by car.

Santiago Cathedral and Mirador de Saltillo Park

Near the Plaza de Armas, stands the majestic Cathedral of Santiago, an architectural jewel dating from the 18th century. Its impressive baroque façade and its interior decorated with various oil paintings from the viceregal era, make it the most representative building in Saltillo and, of course, a must-see. The Mirador Park is one of the most beautiful places in Saltillo to take pictures, with its impressive panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. It is an ideal place for hiking and enjoying nature. It also has rest areas and is a popular place for locals and tourists alike.

The Alameda Zaragoza and the Lake of the Republic

These are two of Saltillo's main green spaces. On the one hand, the Alameda is located in the heart of the city and is a historic park inaugurated in 1890. This is a key spot for strolling, exercising, getting together with friends or simply relaxing under the shade of its leafy trees. Inside, you will find well-tended gardens, fountains and a central kiosk that often hosts cultural events and concerts. On the other hand, the Lago de la Republica, also known as "Lago de la Alameda", is located within the same park. This small but picturesque lake has boating as its main attraction and is home to ducks and other waterfowl. Both attractions are perfect for family fun, picnics and connecting with nature.

Saltillo Museums

Saltillo has a remarkable offer of museums of different kinds. Some of them are:

  • Museo del Desierto y de los Dinosaurios: This is one of the most important museums in northern Mexico. It offers a fascinating view of the flora, fauna and geology of the Chihuahuan Desert. Its exhibits include an impressive collection of plants and animals adapted to life in the desert. In addition, you can have an interactive experience, which will take you through different rooms so you can appreciate the fossil remains of dinosaurs found in the region, such as a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton or the paleontology laboratory.
  • Sarape and Mexican Costumes Museum:** In this museum you can learn about the history of this traditional colorful garment that gives Saltillo its identity. Through its rooms, you can admire ancient and modern sarapes, as well as learn about the history and the elaboration process of these colorful garments. It also has a large collection of typical Mexican costumes.
  • Museum of the Birds of Mexico:** It houses one of the largest collections of birds in the country, with more than 3,000 specimens. It is an ideal place for those who wish to learn more about Mexico's avian diversity and learn about environmental conservation.
  • Museum of Katrina:** This museum is a celebration of Mexican popular culture, centered on the figure of the Catrina. Through its collection, the symbolism of death and the traditions of the Day of the Dead are explored. Also, if you like legends, this museum offers night tours called "Night of Legends".

Wine Route

About an hour from Saltillo is Parras de la Fuente, home of the oldest vineyard in America, inaugurated in 1597 and still in production. This vineyard, known today as Casa Madero, was founded by Jesuits who found the ideal ecosystem in Parras to grow native grapes. Casa Madero, famous for its production of internationally renowned wines, opens its doors to the public to show its corridors, the winemaking process and the historic San Lorenzo Chapel, a vestige of the old hacienda. In addition to Casa Madero, Coahuila offers other wine options, such as Vinícola Rancho El Fortín in Saltillo, which organizes wine tastings and pairing dinners. Another standout on the Saltillo Wine Route is Vinos Don Leo, whose history dates back to 1938 with the arrival of Leo Mendel to Mexico from Linnich, Germany.

Sierra de Zapalinamé

About 45 minutes away by car is the Sierra de Zapalinamé, a protected natural area located between the Chihuahuan Desert and the Sierra Madre Oriental and comprising more than 27,000 hectares. The ecological reserve has several ecosystems and offers multiple outdoor activities, being the perfect place for activities such as canyoning, climbing, flora and fauna observation, rappel and hiking.
