The 5 best places to visit in campeche

The 5 best places to visit in Campeche

The city of Campeche is a quiet and romantic destination, chosen by travelers looking to get away from the crowds of the Yucatan Peninsula and, on the other hand, discover its rich history, cultural variety and wonderful hospitality of its people. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Campeche offers an enchanting blend of history, culture and natural beauty. For a complete experience in this incredible place, from Hertz Mexico we recommend 5 activities you must do during your visit.

1. Historic Downtown

San Francisco de Campeche, the state capital, is located in the great Mayan peninsula and one of its distinctive features is that it was a fortified city for defense against pirate attacks. Its historic center, which is where most of the bastions, forts and walls are located, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There you can find a large model that represents the entire historic center completely surrounded by the wall and the forts in every corner. As we were saying, Campeche has as a reference the constant pirate attacks, since it was an important stopover for the Spanish galleons. For this reason, it has several bastions, that is, fortified constructions or enclosures built to resist enemy attacks, which you can easily tour in a rental car from Hertz Mexico. Then, start the walking tour from the Puerta de Mar to the Independence Square, where, next to the front, you will find the Cathedral La Inmaculada, the old Customs House and the Municipal Palace, three of the most emblematic buildings of the city. The whole center has a very well preserved colonial style, with colorful facades. Enjoy a walk through its cobblestone streets and admire this destination that radiates history, culture and beauty.

2. Malecon

Campeche's Malecon is a coastal jewel that borders the Bay, offering locals and visitors a charming space to enjoy the sea and the sea breeze. This promenade, with an extension of several kilometers, is an iconic place where history and modernity intertwine harmoniously. Along the Malecon, you can find various points of interest, from emblematic sculptures that pay homage to the culture and history of the region, to green areas perfect for relaxing and enjoying a picnic overlooking the sea. In addition, there are numerous benches and lookouts that invite visitors to contemplate the beauty of the ocean and the spectacular sunsets that tint the sky with warm, vibrant tones. The Malecon is also a popular place for recreational and sporting activities. From morning walks and jogs to bike rides. Don't miss the experience of walking along the Malecon at night and enjoying the dancing fountains show.

3. San Miguel Fort

The imposing Fort of San Miguel, built in the 17th century to protect the city, offers a fascinating glimpse into Campeche's military past. It was later used as a housing unit for military families. Inside, visitors can explore a fascinating network of passageways, galleries and courtyards, which offer a unique glimpse into military and daily life during the colonial era. Today, the fort houses the Archaeological Museum of Campeche, which has 10 rooms focused on Maya history and culture. Explore its walls, towers and museums to learn more about the history of the region and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea.

4. Edzná

This Mayan archaeological site is located about 55 km from downtown, so you can rent a car at the Campeche airport with Hertz Mexico to get to this must-see place. It was founded in 600 BC and was the most important pre-Columbian city in western Campeche. Its name was originally Ytzná, The House of the Itzcaes and, over time, was derived in its current name: Edzná. In the year 1450 the city was abandoned by its inhabitants who had lost power and influence and, in 1906, it was discovered. Today it is a must-see in Campeche, where at the entrance you are greeted by a typical Mayan house with several sculptures inside. Then, you must walk a few meters to reach the archaeological zone and find the impressive Great Acropolis, the most representative set of the place. It is a large elevated platform with a quadrangular plan on which eleven structures are erected, including the five-story building, the most important in the area. There are parts where you can climb the pyramids and access a spectacular view of the Mayan jungle. Without a doubt, this unique place in the world should be part of your itinerary during your visit to Campeche.

5. Bonita Beach

About 25 km from the historic center of Campeche is Playa Bonita, an inclusive beach managed by the local government. The entrance fee is affordable, with a large parking lot where you can leave your car and you can use the services of the place such as bathrooms, showers, volleyball court and occupy a palapa. You also have the option of renting tables, chairs and lounge chairs. At Playa Bonita you can bring your own food or you can choose to eat at one of the local restaurants. The beach is quite wide and the waves are very calm, so much so that the first few meters are shallow and look like a pool, so it is very safe. The water is clean and with an ideal temperature. Take advantage and bring your snorkeling equipment to observe the different varieties of fish. These are just some of the activities you can do in Campeche. History, culture, beach and fun is the least you will find in this incredible place. Choose car rental with Hertz Mexico and venture on a trip to the wonderful destination of Campeche.
