Gastronomy of the Gulf of Mexico: the best fresh seafood

The Gulf of Mexico is a region rich in culture and biodiversity, but one of its greatest treasures is its varied and delicious cuisine. Along its coasts, from Tamaulipas to Yucatan, each state has unique dishes that reflect the cultural heritage and abundance of fresh seafood.

In this Hertz Mexico article we want to propose a gastronomic tour that will take you through the distinctive flavors of the Gulf, highlighting the best seafood and typical foods of each place.

Gastronomic tour of the Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico offers beautiful beaches and spectacular scenery, but also a rich culinary tradition that extends along its coastline.

Here's a guide to five stops from Tamaulipas, through Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and ending in Yucatan, so you can sample the coast's gastronomy by car. Hertz Mexico has offices in each of the selected destinations, so you can take advantage of car rental and travel at your own pace, choosing the destination(s) you like the most.

First stop: Tamaulipas

Tampico

Start the tour in Tampico, a destination known for its abundance of fresh seafood and iconic dishes. Among them, molletes with beans and cheese to start the day. For lunch, try the shrimp a la diabla, a dish that stands out for its spicy sauce made with tomato and chili peppers, a delight for those who like it spicy. Another specialty of the region is the machaca de pescado, a traditional preparation that combines dried and shredded fish, served with tortillas and salsa.

In addition, you can take advantage of the proximity and visit Ciudad Madero and Miramar Beach. Just a few minutes' drive from Tampico, Playa Miramar is one of the most popular beaches in the region, ideal for enjoying the sun and sea.

On the other hand, Ciudad Madero offers a quiet experience, to stroll along its boardwalk and continue enjoying the local gastronomy in one of its many restaurants.

Second stop: Veracruz

The city of Veracruz is famous for its cultural life and exquisite cuisine. In the morning, it is typical to start the day with volovanes (vol-au-vent) and empanadas stuffed with seafood. These dishes can be found in various markets.

For lunch, one of the most emblematic dishes is huachinango a la veracruzana, which is prepared with red fish in a tomato sauce, olives, capers and chiles. This meal is a clear reflection of the Spanish influence on Veracruz cuisine. Another must-try is arroz a la tumbada, a seafood rice dish that captures the essence of the sea.

In the evening, you can choose a seafood restaurant in Veracruz and try the cazuela which includes octopus, shrimp, fish and other fresh seafood in a rich soup served hot, ideal for enjoying on the Malecón.

Third stop: Tabasco

In Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, the traditional breakfast includes chipilín tamales, made with corn dough and chipilín leaves. These tamales are a local delicacy and go perfectly with a Tabascan coffee.

For lunch, Comalcalco is the ideal place to try roasted pejelagarto, a river fish typical of the region, grilled and served with lemon and salt. Another option is puchero tabasqueño, a meat stew with vegetables and plantain that reflects Tabasco's agricultural heritage.

In the evening, chirmol is an excellent choice. This dish consists of a tomato and chili sauce that accompanies grilled meats. Don't forget to try the fried plantains for dessert, a sweet and crunchy treat that perfectly complements any meal.

Fourth stop: San Francisco de Campeche

In the walled city of Campeche the typical breakfast includes panuchos and salbutes, fried tortillas filled with beans and topped with chicken or cochinita pibil. These antojitos are delicious and full of flavor.

For lunch, pan de cazón, a Campeche specialty, is a lasagna made with tortillas, dogfish and tomato sauce. You can also try poc chuc, pork marinated in sour orange and spices, grilled and served with red onion and tortillas.

In the evening, visit one of the seafood restaurants in Campeche and try the seafood campechana. This fresh cocktail is prepared with tomato, onion, cilantro and lime juice, and is accompanied by agua de chaya, a traditional drink made with chaya leaves, lime and sugar.

Fifth Stop: Yucatán

Merida

Mérida is the perfect place to end your gastronomic tour in Yucatán, especially if you love seafood. Here, the fresh ceviche is a must-try. The seafood is marinated in lime juice with tomato, onion, cilantro and chiles, creating a dish of fresh and spicy flavors that capture the essence of the Caribbean.

Another delicacy you must try is relleno negro, a regional specialty that reflects the richness of Yucatecan cuisine. This dark and spicy stew, made with turkey meat and black stuffing, is a true culinary delicacy.

To complement your visit, drive about 30 minutes from Mérida to Progreso, a beautiful port, where you can enjoy its boardwalk and taste fresh seafood overlooking the sea. Progreso is also a destination to relax on the beach and enjoy the sea breeze, making it the perfect ending to your trip.

Go ahead and rent a car with Hertz Mexico for a gastronomic trip along the Gulf and enjoy from the fresh seafood of Tamaulipas and Veracruz to the exotic flavors of Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatan.
