Where is it and how to get there?

The Pyramid of Cholula is located in San Andres Cholula, Puebla, about 12 kilometers west of the city of Puebla and about 130 kilometers from Mexico City.

From the city of Puebla, the drive takes about 20 minutes. Hertz Mexico has offices for car rental in Puebla, so you can get there by taking the Avenida Recta a Cholula, which directly connects the city with the archaeological site. Near the archaeological site there are parking lots available to leave your car.

If you are in the capital, to get there you can rent a car in Mexico City and take the Mexico-Puebla highway (MEX 150D). When you arrive in Puebla, follow the signs to Cholula. The drive takes approximately two hours, depending on traffic.

Brief history of the Pyramid of Cholula

The Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as Tlachihualtepetl (which in Nahuatl means “handmade hill”), was built by several pre-Hispanic civilizations, starting with the Olmec-Xicalanca culture. Its construction began approximately in the third century B.C. and, over several centuries, different Mesoamerican groups expanded and modified the structure. Unlike other pyramids, the pyramid of Cholula was built in several stages, which explains its great size: it has a base of 450 meters per side and an original height of 65 meters.

With the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, the pyramid was covered by earth and vegetation, which made it look like a mountain. The conquerors, unaware of the pre-Hispanic structure, built the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios on top of it in 1594, a symbol of the cultural and religious fusion that occurred in the region. This temple is still preserved and is an important place of devotion today.

Curiosities and mysteries of the Pyramid

The largest Pyramid in the world: Although the Great Pyramid of Giza is taller, the Pyramid of Cholula is the largest in volume. It has approximately 4.5 million cubic meters, making it the largest pyramid ever built.

Mysterious tunnels: The pyramid of Cholula contains more than eight kilometers of subway tunnels excavated by archaeologists in the 20th century. These tunnels, partly open to the public, offer a unique insight into the different stages of construction and the architectural complexity of the pyramid.

Mystery of its construction: Unlike the Egyptian pyramids, the Cholula pyramid was built in layers, each one superimposed on the previous one. Some archaeologists suggest that this was done because of a constant need to expand and renovate the site, while others believe that the constructions were done at different times by different cultures.

Ritual and astronomical function: The Great Pyramid of Cholula also had an important ritual and astronomical role. It is believed that the priests used the structure for ceremonies related to agricultural cycles and the seasons. There are also theories that certain alignments of the pyramid had astronomical purposes, helping to predict solstices and equinoxes.
